I tried to replace Grammarly by Apple Intelligence, here’s how it went

I’m in a love-hate association by Grammarly. So, when Apple Intelligence was showed at WWDC24, I hoped the innate, OS-level Writing Tools would substitute my current third-party answer. Fast forward to this week, Apple lastly rolled out some of its future AI features. Naturally, I hurried to put them to the test, and I’ve now come to some pertinent conclusions. While Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools sheen in some habits, Grammarly will remain connected on my MacBook Air aimed at the time being.

Apple Intelligence vs Grammarly: Availability

Several Apple Intelligence features are today available on iPhone 15 then iPhone 16 Pro models consecutively iOS 18.1, along by A17 Pro- and M-powered iPads besides Macs running iPadOS 18.1 then macOS Sequoia 15.1. While you have to join the waitlist to entree these features, getting accepted doesn’t take too long typically.

Conversely, Grammarly is a cross-platform facility available on most operating schemes as a standalone app and browser postponement. Though the basic spelling then grammar checks are free, about more advanced topographies, like writing tone changes, require a monthly contribution. Notably, Grammarly is a cloud-based software program that processes your data by means of the company’s servers besides doesn’t work deprived of an internet connection.

I tried Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools scheduled my iPhone, iPad, besides Mac, and the feature the whole thing similarly across all strategies. So, while I’ll be detailing my experience by it on my primary work engine, a MacBook Air M2, you can expect to happenstance the same assets and weaknesses on iPhones then iPads.

Apple’s Writing Tools: First impressions

In typical Apple fashion, the Writing Tools feature lives in a sleek blackboard that users can admittance when choosing text. The user interface is minimalistic, modern-looking, and not intrusive. Through Writing Tools, AI can check, rewrite, summarize, generate key points, generate a table or list, then adjust the text’s tone to develop friendly, specialized, or concise. Beyond smart answers in the Mail and Messages apps, Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools, different Grammarly, can’t generate manuscript from scratch based on user stimuli.

Once Apple Intelligence achieves the demanded action, the revised text will seem in a floating bubble. You can then copy the whole result, have it replaced the innovative text, or select parts of it. Whereas it’s generally instinctive to operate, I found it stimulating to spot the variations it has applied due to the lack of visual signals in Safari. Some apps like Notes then Messages highlight the practical edits, so Safari could possibly follow suit in a future OS inform.

For reference, Grammarly proactively scans the text and tourist attractions errors, which you container individually speech or ignore. Apple Intellect goes for an all-or-none method, designed to substitute all your (selected) text in its place of letting you go through the faults or suggested tweaks distinctly.

Apple Intelligence vs Grammarly: My personal use case

How beneficial a software is to you will primarily hinge on on your workflow besides expectations. In my case, I individual rely on Grammarly to fix misprints, detect potential verbal errors, and retell some awkwardly expressed sentences in my trainings. I don’t really care about tone intensive care or adjustments, as my script style differs depending on the item’s theme. I prefer upholding my own freestyle tone, which I have faith in makes my work more individual and unique.

So, as you may have noticed, the section above sounds too unusual. It may be linguistic and comprehensible, but it’s clearly not humanmade. So, Apple Intelligence still can’t substitute Grammarly for rephrasing swollen sentences and signifying smoother flows in my articles.

Apple’s suggestions are an all-or-nothing affair, besides having to proofread Apple’s proofread version defeats this tool’s entire purpose.

As for fixing typos and linguistic errors, I’d be satisfactory without practical text scanning if Apple would at least highlight the vagaries its AI has made when typewriting in Safari. These text gears are far from perfect, and I’ll never unthinkingly accept their proposals. Having to check Apple’s proofread form of my article overthrows the entire purpose of the associate. Visual pointers would spare me the essential to reread the whole manuscript by letting me appraisal the individual tweaks only besides apply them where desirable — just like Grammarly works.

So, until then, I’m tactlessly stuck with Grammarly, as I sort my articles right in WordPress.

Other Writing Tools options

While I only need Writing Tools for checking and rewriting convinced sentences in my traineeships, this Apple Intelligence offering landscapes other handy selections. For example, you cannister abridge any text on the web or else have the AI list its key facts. Similarly, it can effortlessly arrange the transcript in a table or as a list, which can type analyzing data cooler. Otherwise, beyond impartially rewording your text, Writing Tools can brand the tone more friendly, specialized, or concise, and I’ll contain samples below.

Apple Intelligence’s particular tone modifiers produced the three short passages above, and I made no edits afterward. I in my opinion think they sound more normal than the robotic revising option I previewed past in this article. The friendly sample is beautiful casual, the qualified one sounds corporatesque enough, in addition the concise version effectively trimmed the fluff I had comprised in my original paragraph deprived of losing the sense.

Apple Intelligence has some potential

While the highlights and reshaped sentences push me to cane to Grammarly for today, Apple Intelligence’s Writing Tools whitethorn change that with upcoming updates. I hatred how persistent Grammarly can be, signifying the same edits over then over after I dismiss them for not corresponding my style. While it’s positively effective, it feels too disturbing, stubborn, then a bit in the way.

On the other hand, Apple’s Writing Tools tariff is less flashy and disturbing, as it only explosions up when summoned by the operator. More importantly, though, it lasts to work even if you’re not associated to the net. However, until Apple apparatuses the visual indicators cited above in Safari, by Writing Tools to proofread my effort isn’t feasible.

Fortunately, this is still an initial version of the software, besides the tech overlord will probably make many developments in the coming months. Will Apple but me from my toxic association with Grammarly by this fall? Vacation tuned.
